Incorporating Webb's Depth of Knowledge in Physical Education

Depth of Knowledge and why is it important in Physical Education?
DOK is important because it helps align instructional and assessment activities with cognitive rigor needed to master the Common Core Standards. Webb's definition of depth of knowledge is the degree or complexity of knowledge that the content curriculum standards and expectations require.
"Physical Education has its own Academic Language that is absolutely essential for preparing students to be proficient movers for a lifetime of quality physical activity."-openphysed

It might be hard to imagine using Webb's Depth of Knowledge in Physical Education. However, DOK can be incorporated into making the physical education curriculum more rigorous.

                                 Bloom's Pyramid               VS                   Webb's

Levels of DOK
1. RECALL
2. SKILL/CONCEPT
3.STRATEGIC THINKING
4.EXTENDED THINKING

EXAMPLE Incorporating The 4 Levels Into Physical Education

DOK 1- Recall & Reproduction
Question: Can you remember the cues for (skill/task)?
Debrief Q: Can you remember the cues for soccer dribbling?
Answer: Push the ball forward with inside/outside of the foot.
DOK 2-Skills & Concepts
Questions: How did (concept) affect (performance)?
Debrief Q: How did the force you used to pass the ball affect your accuracy?
Answer: The force that was used decreased the accuracy because it was harder to control.
DOK 3- Strategic Thinking/ Reasoning
Question: How is concept related to performance/skill ?
Debrief Q: How does your anaerobic capacity relate to your score on the Push-Up test? What does that score mean to you?
Answer: The greater the number of push-up repetitions I complete the more I improve my physical strength.
DOK 4- Extended Thinking
Question: Develop a comprehensive performance plan.
Assessment Q: Develop a fitness journal and log in daily.
Student can demonstrate extended thinking by incorporating information and using that  knowledge that was learned previously.

  • How will this impact your current practice? This will impact my teaching by making the curriculum more rigorous. It would require more teaching and increasing knowledge content but will overall positively engage student learning.
  • What new strategies and information will you need to obtain? As an educator my knowledge and lesson planning will have to be more efficient and organized. I will have to creatively incorporate strategic thinking and extended thinking into my lesson planning.
  • How can teaching to Webb’s Depth of Knowledge and engaging students in richer discussions, learning experiences and rigorous tasks impact student learning? "DOK is about task complexity" Webb's method of teaching encourages students to be able to use their own creative thinking and learning to have more invigorating conversations. When students are given the proper direction and given the green light to extend their thinking they will use their curiosity to create a better learning environment.
