Interdisciplinary Lesson

For this interdisciplinary assignment, I plan on having my students run an experiment on their exercise activity over the course of two weeks. I will be applying standards from both Physical Education and Science with eighth graders in this case. For this assignment, students will be put into pairs and asked to run a half-mile four days a week for two weeks. Eighth grade P.E. Common Core Standard 3.4 Participate in moderate to vigorous physical activity a minimum of four days each week. Eighth grade Science Common Core Standard 9.  Scientific progress is made by asking meaningful questions and conducting careful investigations. As a basis for understanding this concept and addressing the content in the other three strands, students should develop their own questions and perform investigations. Students will: a. Plan and conduct a scientific investigation to test a hypothesis. b. Evaluate the accuracy and reproducibility of data. c. Distinguish between variable and controlled ...

Extrinsic and Intrinsic Motivation

Describe an event in your schooling in which you were inspired to perform. Tell about who motivated you and what the external factors may have been in addition to that part of you that connected to the opportunity      My first year as a middle- school physical education teacher involved plenty of “learning while doing” and using my colleagues as inspiration. During a teacher-staff meeting one of the teachers began speaking about an event called “Cougar Cash Month”. The winning teacher of “Cougar Cash Awards” would be given school supplies for their classroom and more cougar cash to give to students. Cougar cash is a reward system the school uses to help students be more motivated to do well in school in many different ways. This “cash” is in paper form that is different colors depending on the amount its worth. Students can use the cash they earned to buy snacks from the ASB store and many other things. Although this reward method has extrinsic attributes, t...

Incorporating Webb's Depth of Knowledge in Physical Education

Image
Depth of Knowledge and why is it important in Physical Education?        DOK is important because it helps align instructional and assessment activities with cognitive rigor needed to master the Common Core Standards.  Webb's definition  of  depth of knowledge  is the degree or complexity of  knowledge  that the content curriculum standards and expectations require. "Physical Education has its own Academic Language that is absolutely essential for preparing students to be proficient movers for a lifetime of quality physical activity."-openphysed It might be hard to imagine using Webb's Depth of Knowledge in Physical Education. However, DOK can be incorporated into making the physical education curriculum more rigorous.                                  Bloom's Pyramid               VS      ...

Best Practices

In Shaun Killian's article "Top 10 Research Based Teaching Strategies", Killian lays out ten tried and true teaching methods that are proven to lead to improvement in the classroom. When I read the list, I was surprised to find out I was already implementing most of the teaching strategies to some extent. After a closer look, I realized there are two strategies that I use very effectively as a Physical Education teacher for middle school students.  1) The teaching strategy that I emphasize the most to my students is "Plenty of Practice." Killian has this as number five on the list, but it is number one on mine. P.E. is not known for being as rigorous on the mind as it is on the body and, therefore, requires tons of practice to condition the body to become accustomed to the demands of certain tasks. I encourage students to practice the things they feel the least comfortable with, as this is the only real way to improve and develop their confidence and ability....
