Best Practices
In Shaun Killian's article "Top 10 Research Based Teaching Strategies", Killian lays out ten tried and true teaching methods that are proven to lead to improvement in the classroom. When I read the list, I was surprised to find out I was already implementing most of the teaching strategies to some extent. After a closer look, I realized there are two strategies that I use very effectively as a Physical Education teacher for middle school students.
1) The teaching strategy that I emphasize the most to my students is "Plenty of Practice." Killian has this as number five on the list, but it is number one on mine. P.E. is not known for being as rigorous on the mind as it is on the body and, therefore, requires tons of practice to condition the body to become accustomed to the demands of certain tasks. I encourage students to practice the things they feel the least comfortable with, as this is the only real way to improve and develop their confidence and ability.
2) The second teaching strategy I emphasize the most is "Be Flexible About How Long it Takes to Learn". This is something I constantly preach to my students. Some kids are born with insane athletic ability while others have to work extremely hard just to master the basics. Students have to be realistic about their ability to master difficult tasks and set achievable goals to work towards a high level of skill.
