During a teacher-staff meeting one of the teachers began speaking about an event called “Cougar Cash Month”. The winning teacher of “Cougar Cash Awards” would be given school supplies for their classroom and more cougar cash to give to students. Cougar cash is a reward system the school uses to help students be more motivated to do well in school in many different ways. Depth of Knowledge and why is it important in Physical Education?        DOK is important because it helps align instructional and assessment activities with cognitive rigor needed to master the Common Core Standards.  Webb's definition  of  depth of knowledge  is the degree or complexity of  knowledge  that the content curriculum standards and expectations require. "Physical Education has its own Academic Language that is absolutely essential for preparing students to be proficient movers for a lifetime of quality physical activity."-openphysed It might be hard to imagine using Webb's Depth of Knowledge in Physical Education. In Shaun Killian's article "Top 10 Research Based Teaching Strategies", Killian lays out ten tried and true teaching methods that are proven to lead to improvement in the classroom. When I read the list, I was surprised to find out I was already implementing most of the teaching strategies to some extent. After a closer look, I realized there are two strategies that I use very effectively as a Physical Education teacher for middle school students.  1) The teaching strategy that I emphasize the most to my students is "Plenty of Practice." Killian has this as number five on the list, but it is number one on mine. P.E. is not known for being as rigorous on the mind as it is on the body and, therefore, requires tons of practice to condition the body to become accustomed to the demands of certain tasks. My name is Celene Batrez-Long and I am currently a middle school P.E. teacher in Riverside County, California.
